Named for the brassy tones that I've allowed to permeate in this image, admiralty brass is a non-ferrous metal known for its corrosion resistance and strength. Commonly used in marine applications, the overall mood cast on this image by the setting sun combined with the maritime elements in Hout Bay called for just such a tone to bring the scene together. The 'nostalgic negative' film simulation I chose further enhances the aesthetic.
The selected film simulation built into the camera imparts it's tonal characteristic. It used to be a part of the photographer's skillset that allowed them to see a meaningful composition and light. To choose the best film and exposure settings to create the atmosphere they wanted to embody. I shoot with manual settings and single shot (not rapid bursts) as much as possible to recreate that authenticity. My approach with each shot is very intentional rather than 'spray and pray.' I try to impart a bit of myself into each photograph, imperfections included, rather than allowing the CPU and AI in cameras today do the work.
