We were headed back toward Cape Town from Muizenberg via Chapman's Peak. We had not planned any stops. That's what makes these moments magical. They were unplanned. Unscripted. I was driving, but am ever drawn to great light, scenes and compositions. It was almost 8pm and the sun was low. As we passed the toll booth this scene appeared. The mountain casting shadow over Hout Bay glowed gold in the waning sun.
Shot on my Fujifilm XT-5, I prefer to give my images a filmic feel by selecting a fitting film simulation to express the mood of the scene. This one conveys the warmth of the summer sun on the mountains overlooking Hout Bay as the day waned.
The selected film simulation built into the camera imparts it's tonal characteristic. It used to be a part of the photographer's skillset that allowed them to see a meaningful composition and light. To choose the best film and exposure settings to create the atmosphere they wanted to embody. I shoot with manual settings and single shot (not rapid bursts) as much as possible to recreate that authenticity. My approach with each shot is very intentional rather than 'spray and pray.' I try to impart a bit of myself into each photograph, imperfections included, rather than allowing the CPU and AI in cameras today do the work.
