The original image that I captured in-camera. Personally I prefer this over the edited version despite it's 'flatter' appearance. I feel that not everything has to 'pop' or have high contrast to carry a mood. So whilst on a technical basis this image would not score as well in a competition these days, it moves me emotionally which I prioritise over technical prowess.
Being the as-shot image also adds a dimension of authenticity akin to the old film photography approach. They could darken and lighten (dodge & burn) when developing, and could crop, but that was all that they could do and this is what I value in these 'artist original' images.
The selected film simulation built into the camera imparts it's tonal characteristic. It used to be a part of the photographer's skillset that allowed them to see a meaningful composition and light. To choose the best film and exposure settings to create the atmosphere they wanted to embody. I shoot with manual settings and single shot (not rapid bursts) as much as possible to recreate that authenticity. My approach with each shot is very intentional rather than 'spray and pray.' I try to impart a bit of myself into each photograph, imperfections included, rather than allowing the CPU and AI in cameras today do the work.
