We had no intention of stopping as we passed LLandudno Beach on our way back to Cape Town. It was the low lying blanket of cloud over the ocean that made us pull over. I stood atop a boulder, fighting the howling wind to capture the cascading clouds coming over the mountain and forming its blanket over the ocean. A thin line of orange light separated two phases of water as the sun dissapeared into the Atlantic. A couple sat sharing drinks with each other, and this magnificent scene with us.
The selected film simulation built into the camera imparts it's tonal characteristic. It used to be a part of the photographer's skillset that allowed them to see a meaningful composition and light. To choose the best film and exposure settings to create the atmosphere they wanted to embody. I shoot with manual settings and single shot (not rapid bursts) as much as possible to recreate that authenticity. My approach with each shot is very intentional rather than 'spray and pray.' I try to impart a bit of myself into each photograph, imperfections included, rather than allowing the CPU and AI in cameras today do the work.
