The infamous big wave surf spot known as 'Dungeons' lies just off-shore, at the foot of the cliffs. I felt the name befitting the mood that was conveyed by the monochrome image. Dark and intimidating, much like the wave when Dungeons is firing. It's monsterous, unpredictable and powerful.
The selected film simulation built into the camera imparts it's tonal characteristic. It used to be a part of the photographer's skillset that allowed them to see a meaningful composition and light. To choose the best film and exposure settings to create the atmosphere they wanted to embody. I shoot with manual settings and single shot (not rapid bursts) as much as possible to recreate that authenticity. My approach with each shot is very intentional rather than 'spray and pray.' I try to impart a bit of myself into each photograph, imperfections included, rather than allowing the CPU and AI in cameras today do the work.
